Through the lens: Northern Lights

“The Northern Lights”, aurora borealis, were visible throughout Kansas on Oct. 10-11.

The display – caused by a G4 geomagnetic storm according to the Space Weather Prediction Center – was observed both by the naked eye and cameras.

The Space Weather Prediction Center issued a G4 warning for severe geomagnetic storms for Thursday and Friday. It is an alert that the center has issued only twice since 2005.

The last time a the aurora borealis was visible this far south was earlier this year in May, when at least five coronal mass ejections were directed toward Earth.
