Editors note: This story was corrected for the location the bus pulled over.

Newton Police are investigating an incident that occurred this afternoon on a USD 373 bus. 

In the course of the investigation, police have confirmed that during the ride home from school, a can of Axe body spray was punctured, requiring the bus to be evacuated. The bus pulled over on South Kansas Avenue near SE 14th Street. and asked the students to exit the bus. The bus was carrying about 64 students. 

The students were told to stay with the bus  while it aired out, but most of them scattered. Eight students stayed with the bus, and they were taken home on the bus. 

The other students walked home, were picked up by police, or got other rides. We believe all students are safe. 

The incident is still under investigation.
