Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 7 has opened.

This week’s nominees are:

Boys

Corey Crumrine, senior, Sedgwick High School, football. In a 69-35 win over Remington, Crumrine hit 24 of 33 passes for 361 yards and four touchdowns. Crumrine also rushed for 91 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns.

Enrique Mercado, senior, Newton High School, soccer. In two games, both Newton wins, Mercado scored a goal with five assists.

Eli Gaeddert, sophomore, Goessel, cross country. Gaeddert finished second in the Class 1A regionals in 16:28.24 to qualify for the state championships.

Girls

Alyssa Klingenberg, freshman, Remington, cross country. Placed fourth in the Class 2A regionals in 20:01.62. Helped lead Remington to a second-place team finish to qualify for state.

Bailey Bernal, sophomore, Halstead, volleyball. In five matches, all wins, Bernal has 48 kills, 5 aces, 1 block, 29 digs and 3 assists. Led Halstead to regional and sub-state titles for first state berth in 33 years.

Wendy Roth, sophomore, Hesston, golf. Tied for 30th in the Class 3-2-1A state golf championships with a 93-96—189. Led Hesston to a seventh-place team finish at the state tournament.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the Nov. 9 Kansan.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites. Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing cschnabel@cherryroad.com. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
