Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting for the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 5 has opened.

This week’s nominees are:

Boys

Henry Hecox, senior, Moundridge High School, football. Hit eight of 13 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns in a 13-6 Heart of America League and Class 1A district win over Marion. Moundridge is 5-0.

Jobe Entz, senior, Newton High School, soccer. Scored three goals with two assists in an 8-0 win over Salina Central to keep Newton unbeaten in AV-CTL II play.

Casey Heinrichs, senior, Hesston High School, cross country. Placed third in the Goessel Invitational in 17:17.07, the top area finisher in the race.

Girls

Maisie Brubacher, junior, Newton High School, tennis. Placed third in the Class 5A regional tournament to qualify for state. Placed sixth in AV-CTL II singles.

Brooklyn Treaster, sophomore, Newton High School, cross country. Placed fifth at the El Dorado Invitational in 20:23.90.

Wendy Roth, sophomore, Hesston High School, golf. Placed third at the Central Kansas League championships at, leading the Swathers to a second-place team finish.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the Oct. 26 Kansan.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites. Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing cschnabel@cherryroad.com. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
