Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 8 of the fall sports season has opened.

This week’s nominees are:                                                                                  

Boys

Gabe Decker, senior, Newton High School, cross country. Finished 11th at the Class 5A regional meet in 17:54.55 at Lake Barton to qualify for the state meet.

Pius Graf, senior, Remington High School, football. Hit 13 of 17 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown. Had 62 yards rushing on eight carries for two touchdowns. Recovered blocked punt in end zone for a touchdown as Remington downed Sedgwick 40-0 to qualify for the Class 1A playoffs.

Eli Gaeddert, junior, Goessel High School, cross country. Won the Class 1A regional race in 16:58.34 at Richmond to qualify for state.

Girls

Kylie Warden, sophomore, Hesston High School, volleyball. In two Hesston wins, Warden posted 17 kills, 1 ace, 1 block and 22 digs. Hesston won the Class 3A sub-state to advance to state.

Chelsea Willour, senior, Remington High School, cross country. Placed fifth at the Class 2A regional cross country meet at Wichita Trinity Academy in 22:08.20. Led Remington to a third-place team finish to qualify for state.

Maggie Kepley, freshman, Newton High School, cross country. Placed sixth at the Class 5A regional cross country meet at Lake Barton in 20:29.73 to qualify for state. Helped lead Newton to a fourth-place team finish.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the Kansan.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.

Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing cschnabel@cherryroad.com. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
