Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 3 of the fall sports season has opened.

This week’s nominees are:                                                                                  

Boys

Esnayder Garcia Torrez, senior, Newton High School, soccer. Scored three goals with an assist in two Newton High School wins.

Blayne Wilson, senior, Hesston High School, football. Had 10 carries for 155 yards and three touchdowns in a 51-0 Hesston win over Smoky Valley.

Cyrus Blough, junior, Moundridge High School, football. Hit three of four extra-point kicks and field goals of 31 and 56 yards. The latter was a school record and just short of a state record.

Girls

Maci Kramer, senior, Hesston High School, golf. Was top medalist at the Cheney Invitational at 85. Led Hesston to a second-place finish.

Ella Baier, sophomore, Newton High School, gymnastics. Scored a 31.0 all-around at the Newton Invitational, taking 14th. Scored a 32.0 earlier in the week at the Free State Invitational.

Hattie Hecox, junior, Moundridge, volleyball. Had 56 kills and four aces at the Belle Plaine Invitational, leading the Wildcats to a tourney title.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the Kansan.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.
