Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 4 of the fall sports season has opened.

This week’s nominees are:                                                                                  

Boys

Jerick Humphreys, junior, Hesston High School, football. Hit 11 of 17 passes for 217 yards with two touchdowns, also rushed for two touchdowns in a 55-12 in over Nickerson.

Eli Gaeddert, junior, Goessel High School, cross country. Finished second in the varsity blue boys’ division of the Rim Rock Classic in 16:37.18.

Aiden Hurst, junior, Peabody-Burns High School, football. Hit 12 of 22 passes for 193 yards and four touchdowns, rushed 10 times for 124 yards and two touchdowns in a 58-26 win over Pawnee Heights.

Girls

Reese Quinn, junior, Hesston High School, cross country. Placed second in the varsity blue division of the Rim Rock Classic in 19:39.46, leading the Swathers to the team title out of 45 schools in more than four states.

Coe’lina Mosqueda, junior, Newton High School, gymnastics. Scored a 31.55 all-around at the Emporia Invitational and a 32.35 at the Lawrence Free State Invitational. Newton won the Emporia meet and took fourth at the Free State meet.

Kalyn Sampson, senior, Sedgwick High School, volleyball. In two matches, scored 17 kills, four aces, 1 downed block, 18 digs and 23 assists, both Cardinal wins.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the Kansan.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.

Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing cschnabel@cherryroad.com. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
