The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 1 of the fall sports season has opened.

This week’s nominees are:
Boys
Esnayer Garcia Torrez, senior, Newton High School, soccer. Scored five goals with an assist in four games, all Railer win, including the game winner against Wichita East to win the Titan Classic.
Brayton Base, junior, Goessel High School, football. Passed for 92 yards and four touchdowns on four of six passing and rushed for a touchdown in a 50-30 win over Wakefield.
Diesel Bergen, junior, Hesston High School, soccer. Scored six goals with an assist in five Swather games. Hesston went 4-1 to open the season, 2-1 to take third place at the Titan Classic.
Girls
Wendy Roth, junior, Hesston High School, golf. Tied for second at the Hesston Invitational. Tied for 20th at Class 4A State Preview.
Maisie Brubacher, senior, Newton High School, tennis. Placed fourth in singles play at the McPherson Invitational.
Aubrianne Briscoe, junior, Berean Academy, cross country. Placed second in the junior-senior two-mile race at the Clearwater Invitational.
Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the Kansan.
Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.
