Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 4 of the spring sports season has opened.

This week’s nominees are:

Boys

Cole Dillon, sophomore, Newton High School, track. Won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and long jump at the Larned Invitational. Anchored the winning 4×100-meter relay team.

Eli Claassen, Remington High School, baseball. Pitched a two-hit win over Hutchinson Trinity, striking out eight. Drove in two runs.

Keegan Shelite, senior, Hesston High School, baseball. Had four home runs and 10 RBIs in a doubleheader sweep of Hoisington.

Girls

Mackenzie Sauerwein, senior, Newton High School, track. Won the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the Larned Invitational. Anchored the winning 4×100-meter relay team. Took second in the long jump.

Cambree Lawler, Remington High School, softball. Claimed two wins against Hutchinson Trinity. She struck out 13 and won a one-hitter.

Annie Williams, freshman, Halstead High School, track. Won the 100-meter high and 300-meter low hurdles and long jump at the Halstead Central Kansas Track League meet. Took second in the high jump.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the May 3 Kansan print edition.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.

Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing cschnabel@cherryroad.com. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
