Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 1 of the spring sports season has opened.

This week’s nominees are:

Boys

Janmejay Patwardhan, sophomore, Hesston High School, tennis. Won the Hesston Invitational first singles title at 3-0.

Ethan Downey, Newton High School, senior. Finished 3-1 in singles play at the McPherson Invitational.

Finn Lintecum, Moundridge High School, baseball. Went 6 of 8 hitting in two games with three doubles, four runs scored and five RBIs.

Girls

Adriana Alvarez, senior, Newton High School, soccer. Scored three goals as the Railers finished the week 2-1, taking fifth in the McPherson Invitational.

Sam Strausz, senior, Moundridge High School, softball. Went 8 of 23 hitting in four games with three doubles and seven RBIs.

Kynsee Klaassen, Remington High School, softball. Went 4 for 6 in two games with five runs scored and two RBIs.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the April 20 Kansan print edition.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.

Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing cschnabel@cherryroad.com. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
