The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 12 of the winter sports season has opened.

This week’s nominees are:

Boys

Camden Schmidt, senior, Newton High School, basketball. Scored 44 points in two games as Newton finished the week 1-1.

Connor Herman, senior, Halstead High School, wrestling. Placed second in the Class 4A regionals at heavyweight with a 2-1 record. Claimed both wins by pin.

Mario Murillo, sophomore, Hesston High School, bowling. Placed fifth in the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division II Championships. Bowled a 300 game and a 693 series.

Girls

Karla Lopez-Correa, Newton High School, bowling. Took seventh at the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division II Championships at 411. Had Newton’s high game of 153.

Jordy Schroeder, Halstead High School, basketball. Scored 20 points in two games, both Halstead wins.

Aimee Funk, senior, Goessel High School, basketball. Scored 28 points in two games, both Goessel wins.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the March 8 Kansan.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.
