Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 8 of the winter sports season has opened.

The site is at https://contests.cherryroad.com/event/cc6cf7a632282f04.

This week’s nominees are:

Boys

Bear Moddelmog, senior, Moundridge High School, basketball. Scored 33 points in three games to lead Moundridge to the Hillsboro Trojan Classic title.

Reed Friesen, senior, Hesston High School, basketball. Scored 38 points in three games at the Hillsboro Trojan Classic.

Nate Barron, senior, Newton High School, wrestling. Finished the week 5-0, winning the 150-pound weight class at the Eureka Invitational.

Girls

Camila Martinez, senior, Remington High School, wrestling. Finished the week 8-0, winning the 110-pound title at both the Eureka Invitational and Nickerson Invitational. Seven of the wins were by pin.

Jaeann James, junior, Newton High School, wrestling. Finished the week 4-0, winning the title at 130 pounds at the Eureka Invitational. All four wins were by pin.

Kendal Brueggen, senior, Hesston High School, basketball. Scored 42 points with 20 rebounds in three games to lead Hesston to the title of the Hillsboro Trojan Classic.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the Feb. 1 Kansan.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.

Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing cschnabel@cherryroad.com. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
