The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 7 of the winter sports season has opened.

This week’s nominees are:

Boys

Connor Herman, senior, Halstead-Sedgwick, wrestling. Won the heavyweight title of the Halstead Invitational.

Chayton Buffalo, senior, Newton High School, basketball. Scored 14 points total in two games, both Newton wins.

Emory Kukula, junior, Berean Academy, basketball. Scored 13 points in a 51-32 win over Wichita Central Christian Academy.

Girls

Brookelyn Treaster, sophomore, Newton High School, wrestling. Placed second in the Newton Invitational Tournament of Champions at 125 pounds.

Ava Armstrong, freshman, Halstead-Sedgwick, wrestling. Won the 170-pound weight class at the Halstad Invitational.

Piper Schroeder, sophomore, Halstead High School, basketball. Scored 38 points total in two games, both Halstead wins.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the Feb. 1 Kansan.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.

Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing cschnabel@cherryroad.com. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
