Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 2 of the winter sports season has opened.

This week’s nominees are:

Boys

Wyatt Friesen, sophomore, Berean Academy, basketball. Scored 10 points in the championship game of the Marion Classic to lead the Warriors over Wichita Homeschool.

Elliott Hochstettler, sophomore, Remington High School, basketball. Scored 19 points in the championship game of the Remington Classic to lead the Broncos to the tournament title.

Tanner Scott, sophomore, Newton High School, swimming. Placed second in diving at the Andover Central Invitational with a score of 201.75.

Girls

Avery Hinojos, junior, Newton High School, wrestling. Finished 4-0 to win the title of the Douglass Goodwill Invitational.

Kendall Brueggen, senior, Hesston High School. Scored 23 points in a 61-21 win over Garden Plain.

Piper Schroeder, junior, Halstead High School. Scored nine points in the championship game of the Marion Classic. Was named most inspirational player and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the Dec. 28 Kansan.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.

Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing cschnabel@cherryroad.com. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
