The Newton-Hesston boys’ bowling team put itself in a position to place at the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division II Championships after a win over Salina Central Thursday at Eastgate Lanes.
Newton-Hesston topped the Mustangs 2,511-2,338. The Newton girls fell to Salina Central 1,616-1,490.
“We started out really slow and I had a pep talk with them before that third game for the varsity girls and boys both,” Newton coach Jamie Brockman said. “We kind of came together for that third game. We threw out a 212 game, so that’s pretty good.”
In the boys’ competition, Wyatt Huffman of Central had the top series of 742. Mario Murillo of Newton-Hesston was second at 695. Tanner McAllister of Newton-Hesston was third at 668. Christian Martinez of Newton-Hesston was fourth at 584.
“It’s pretty good, I felt pretty consistent the whole time,” Murillo said. “In the second game, I had to make a ball change because my first ball wasn’t getting into the pocket at the right angle. I’m pretty happy with it.”
The win for the boys puts the team in third place after league duals and triangulars. Regular season results carry into the league tournament.
“It’s going to be nice,” Murrillo said. “That puts us in pretty good position. I’d like to see from the team consistent games and high series. We’re getting there. I’d like to get consistent and get a 700 series.”
“If we win the whole thing, we have a chance at winning the league,” Brockman said.
In the girls’ competition, Tori Shuler of Central had the top series of 481. Gracie Trustie of Central was second at 447. Newton’s Karla Lopez-Correa was third at 440, followed by teammates Adriana Jaso in fourth at 405 and Kailyn Wright in fifth at 350.
“They’re consistently getting better,” Brockman said. “Our first game was one of the highest of the year. We dropped off a little at the end. Everybody is getting better. Their attitudes are positive.”
