Former USD 373 teacher, coach involved in fatal accident

Former Newton High School basketball coach Don Cameron and his wife, teacher Susan Cameron, were in a car struck by a suspected drunk driver Sept. 7 in Lenexa, Kansas.

Johnson County MED-ACT reported Susan Cameron, 72, was pronounced dead at the scene. Don Cameron, 74, was transported to a Lenexa hospital in stable condition.

The Cameron’s left the district in 2015.

The Johnson County District Attorney’s Office filed charges of second-degree murder, DUI, transporting an open container of alcohol and driving with a suspended license against 31-year-old Vincente F. Perez of Barstow, California, on Monday.

According to the Lenexa police department, Perez was driving a Subaru WRX east on College when he rear-ended a Nissan Altima where Cameron was a passenger. The collision caused both cars to leave the road.

Perez was hospitalized, discharged, and taken to jail later on Saturday night.
