SALINA — The third quarter for the Newton High School girls’ basketball team resembled the third quarter of a number of Railer games this season, watching a close game get away. It almost happened again after getting outscored 19-8 in the third quarter against Salina South, but the Railers put things back together in the fourth quarter to claim a 47-43 win over the host Cougars Tuesday in Salina.

Prep girls Central Kansas League Nickerson 55, Hesston 40 HESSTON — Ava Jones scored 30 points to lead the Nickerson Panther girls to a 55-40 win over Hesston Tuesday in CKL play. Nickerson led 30-23 at the half and 41-30 after three quarters.
SALINA — The Newton High School boys’ basketball team had an almost identical game Tuesday in a 69-47 loss at Salina South as they had Friday against Valley Center. In both games, Newton struggled from the field and fell behind early, while the Railers’ opponent had the hot hand on offense.
