HALSTEAD – Halstead High School named Derek Racette as its new head football, lifting and track coach. Racette succeeds Jason Grider, who resigned to become an assistant at Bethel College.

Prep girls Heart of America Sterling 44, Berean Ac. 39 ELBING – The Sterling Black Bear girls used a 17-10 fourth quarter to get by Berean Academy 44-39 Monday in a clash of HOAL unbeatens in Elbing.
The Bethel College men’s basketball team went over the century mark for the second time in three games, downing Saint Mary 101-84 Saturday in KCAC play at Thresher Gym. Bethel tied the school record for most wins in a season at 22.
Prep girls Central Kansas League Halstead 44, Larned 38 Halstead 44, Larned 38 HALSTEAD – The Halstead Dragon girls held off Larned 44-38 Friday in CKL play in Halstead. Halstead led 28-20 at the half and 37-30 after three quarters.
MAIZE – The Newton High School boys’ swimming team ended the regular season by claiming a pair of individual medals, including an individual league title, and a relay medal Friday at the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I championships at the recently completed Maize Performing Arts and Aquatics Center.
MAIZE – The Newton High School boys’ basketball team fell to Maize South 73-31 Friday in AV-CTL I play at Maize. Newton trailed 11-9 after the first quarter and 33-23 at the half.
AUBURN – The Newton High School girls’ wrestling team qualified just one entry for the Class 6-5A state tournament, but that entry is in good shape for a chance at a medal. Jaymie Murry won the title at 143 pounds to advance.

HILLSBORO – The Halstead Dragon boys’ wrestling team finished third, while Hesston was 10th Thursday at the Central Kansas League Championships at Hillsboro. Hoisington won the team title by one point over Pratt 154.5-153.5, Halstead was third at 103.5.
