Flip-Flop Shop gymnasts open season
The Newton Flip- Flop Shop gymnastics team opened its season with two meets – Jan. 16 at the New Year Invitational hosted by Jag Gymnastics in Andover; and a meet Jan. 29 hosted by McPherson and the Teuton Twisters.
Thresher men set another milestone
SALINA – The current crop of Bethel College men’s basketball players have set a lot of milestones in the last few years. The Threshers hit another one Wednesday in an 85-74 win over Kansas Wesleyan in KCAC play at Mabee Arena in Salina.

Free throws the difference in BC women’s loss
SALINA – The Bethel College women’s basketball team outplayed Kansas Wesleyan about everywhere except the free throw line, falling to the Coyotes 52-48 Wednesday in KCAC play in Salina. Kansas Wesleyan, 18-9, went 10 of 11 from the line, while Bethel missed all five attempts.
MMA growing at Ultimate Marshal Arts
Chris Rangel started a youth Mixed Marshal Arts program about three years ago at his gymnasium, Ultimate Marshall Arts. He started with five kids, the program has grown to more than 50.

Second-half turnovers slow Railer boys
The Newton High School boys’ basketball team went into the half with a lead, but three turnovers and two fouls in the first minute of the second half foreshadowed the rest of the game as the Railers fell to Derby 78-61 Tuesday in AV-CTL I play in Newton.
Railers hit roadblock against Derby
After showing signs of moving in the right direction in the past few games, the Newton High School girls’ basketball team hit a roadblock in the last two. The Railers fell to Derby 67-14 Tuesday in AV-CTL I play at Ravenscroft Gym.
