VALLEY CENTER – The Newton High School boys’ tennis team opened the season by splitting its squad and competing in two tournaments. Newton finished third out of six teams Tuesday and Wednesday at the Valley Center Invitational.
WICHITA – The Newton High School girls’ swimming team opened the season with a state qualifier in two events, taking eighth Friday and Saturday at the 18-team Wichita Northwest Invitational. Wichita East topped the standings at 282 points.
VALLEY CENTER – The Newton High School softball team put up a pair of football-looking scores in a sweep of a triangular Thursday at Valley Center. Newton topped Great Bend 23-7 and edged host Valley Center 8-6.
VALLEY CENTER – The Newton High School baseball team claimed a split Thursday in a nonleague triangular in Valley Center. The Railers downed Dodge City 8-6 and fell to host Valley Center 8-3.

Thresher golfers 6th at Southwestern WINFIELD – The Bethel College golf team finished sixth out of eight teams Monday and Tuesday at the Southwestern Moundbuilder Spring Classic at the Quail Ridge Golf Course in Winfield. Host Southwestern won the meet at 615, followed by the University of Sciences & Arts of Oklahoma and Oklahoma Panhandle State tied for second at 621.
