EMPORIA – There were some disappointments and some surprises for the Newton High School track teams Friday at the Class 5A regional meet at Emporia State’s Welch Stadium. The Railers qualified 15 athletes in 14 events to the state meet with top-four regional finishes.
LENEXA – Newton junior Madison Horton reached the consolation finals in two events Friday and Saturday at the Class 5-4-3-2-1A State Swimming and Diving Championships at the Shawnee Mission District Aquatic Center.

The Newton High School softball team is off to state for the first time in a number of years, winning the Class 5A regional tournament Wednesday at Kelsch Field. Newton topped Maize in the semifinals 4-0 on a Tegan Livesay one-hitter.
