The Kansan Staff The Newton High School girls’ golf team entered two squads in the Newton Invitational Tuesday at the Ward Family Tennis Center on the Bethel College campus and the Phil Scott Tennis Courts on the NHS campus. Andover won the tournament with 57 points.

Newton runners open season AUGUSTA — The Newton High School cross country teams opened the season Saturday at the JK Gold Classic at the Four-Mile Creek Resort in rural Augusta. The Newton girls placed ninth out of 10 scoring teams, while the Railer boys were 13th out of 17 scoring teams.
The offense for the Newton High School football team took a little too long to get going in a 21-17 loss to Valley Center Friday in the season opener at Fischer Field. The Railer defense did manage a safety and a pick-six, but gave up a couple long touchdown plays early and couldn’t get stops late.
The Kansan Staff The Bethel College women’s soccer team posted its first win under first-year head coach Luka Milicevic, stopping Stephens College 5-0 Monday morning at Thresher Stadium. Bethelo scored all five goals in the second half.
