It was two in a row for the Newton High School football team, which was able to get most of its players involved in a 4514 win over Salina South Friday in AV-CTL I play on senior night at Fischer Field. It matches Newton’s highest scoring total since beating Salina Central 4521 in 2016.
Newton netters qualify SALINA — The Newton High School girls’ tennis team qualified a singles entry and a doubles entry to state after top six-finishes Saturday at the Class 5A regionals in Salina. Salina Central won the team title with 23 points, while Maize South was second with 11, Maize was third with 10 and Newton was fourth with nine.
Ahead of the University of Kansas’ biggest football matchup since the 2007 Orange Bowl season, KU Athletics Director Travis Goff announced on Friday major upgrades to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. “It truly has a chance, in terms of multi-use, economic impact, to drive change for Lawrence and, we think, for the region and the state,” Goff told media gathered near the stadium’s south scoreboard.
The Newton High School gymnastics team posted its season-high school of 96.7 Saturday for a fifth-place finish at the Newton Invitational at Ravenscroft Gym. Olathe North won the team title at 105.75, followed by Olathe West at 105.7, Olathe Northwest at 98.45, Olathe East at 97.6, Newton, Olathe South at 95.85 and Emporia at 86.55.
Eight-Man I, District 4 Moundridge 42, Solomon 34 SOLOMON — Henry Hecox rushed for four touchdowns and passed for a fifth in a 42-34 Moundridge win over Solomon Friday in Eight-Man I district play. Tied 22-22 at the half, Moundridge outscored the Gorillas 14-0 in the third quarter, adding another score early in the fourth quarter.
It was another step forward for the 12thranked (NAIA) Bethel College football team in a 31-23 win over the sixthranked Southwestern Moundbuilders Saturday in KCAC play at Thresher Stadium on Fall Fest. Bethel, 6-0 overall and in KCAC play, was able to trade touchdowns for field goals in key situations.
