Newton soccer team falls to top-ranked South
MAIZE — About a 12-minute span to open the second half spelt the demise of the Newton High School boys’ soccer team in a 5-2 loss to the top-ranked (KSCA, Class 5A) Maize South Mavericks Tuesday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play at Maize South. Up 1-0 at the half, the unbeaten Mavericks scored four goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half to put the game away.

The Bethel College volleyball team fell to Ottawa in three sets Tuesday in KCAC play at Thresher Gym. Bethel fell 25-23, 25-18, 25-23.
Railers affect outcome of league race
MAIZE — The Newton High School volleyball team hasn’t been in the Ark Valley- Chisholm Trail League race much this season, but the Railers did affect the outcome. Newton split in a league triangular against the two co-leaders Tuesday at Maize.
Heat goes 5-0 at tourney
The G2 Heat Carbajal 14U team played in Salina last weekend in the Fun Fall Finale (before turf) at Bill Burke softball complex. The G2 Heat Carbajal went 5-0 through out the day, while edging out the Quicksilver 14U team with a final score of 9 to 8 to win the Championship.
Railer golfers qualify for state
The Kansan Staff SALINA — For the first time in several years, the Newton High School girls’ golf team qualified for state as a team, taking fourth Monday at the Class 5A regional tournament at the Salina Municipal Golf Course. The top four teams qualify for state.
