Railers send two runners to state GREAT BEND — Two members of the Newton High School cross country team — senior Simon Secor and sophomore Lucas Kaufman — qualified for state during the Class 5A regional meet Saturday at the Lake Barton Cross Country Course. The top three teams, medalists and the top five runners not on the top three teams advance to the state meet Saturday at Rim Rock Farm outside of Lawrence.

The Kansan Staff OLATHE – The Newton High School gymnastics team ended the season with two competitors at the 50th KSHSAA State Championships Saturday at Olathe South. Senior Elisa Fernandez finished her prep career placing 37th on the vault at 8.45, 22nd on the uneven parallel bars at 7.5, 17th on the balance beam at 8.425 and 33rd on the floor exercises at 8.125.

ELBING — After three goals in the first 8 ½ minutes of play, the Class 4-3-2-1A boys’ soccer regional semifinals at Berean Academy, it looked like a high-scoring affair was in store. Instead, the defenses took over and Classical School of Wichita-Wichita Central Christian Academy was able to hold on for a 2-1 win.
