The Newton High School boys’ swimming team opened the season with a seventh-place finish at the nine-team Newton Invitational I Thursday at the NHS pool. Andover topped crosstown rival and defending Class 5-4-3-2-1A state champion Andover Central 307-256.5 for the team title.
OTTAWA — The Ottawa Braves made an 11-3 run down the stretch to stop the Bethel College women’s basketball team 57-51 Thursday in KCAC play in Ottawa. Bethel led 17-13 after the first quarter and 29-28 at the half.
The Kansan Staff HAYS — The Newton High School girls’ basketball team was outscored 21-7 from the free throw line in a 4529 loss to Hays Thursday in the Hays City Shootout. Newton trailed 13-5 after the first quarter, 21-13 at the half and 3223 after three quarters.
