McPHERSON — The Newton High School girls’ wrestling team opened the season with a fifth-place finish Saturday at the 17-team Doug Kretzer Invitational in McPherson. Junction City won the team title at 182 points, followed by Kapaun-Mt.
VALLEY CENTER — The Newton High School boys’ wrestling team opened the season Friday by winning the Valley Center Invitational. Newton topped Rose Hill 224.5-212.5 for the team title.
HAYS – The Newton High School girls’ basketball team slipped by Thomas More Prep-Marian 35-32 in overtime Friday in the consolation semifinals of the Hays City Shootout. Tied 7-7 after the first quarter, Newton led 18-16 at the half.
PREP GIRLS Non-League Moundridge 41, Elyria Chr. 24 ELYRIA — The Moundridge High School girls’ basketball team opened the season with a 41-24 win over Elyria Christian Friday in non-league play in Elyria.
The Bethel College women’s basketball team easily got by Manhattan Christian College 99-39 in non-conference play at Thresher Gym. Bethel tied the school record for 3-pointers in a game at 15 and missed tying the all-time single-game scoring record by six points.
