MAIZE — The Newton High School boys’ wrestling team fell short in its bid for back-to-back Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I titles with a 55-24 loss to topranked (KWCA, Class 5A) Maize Thursday in Maize. The Railer girls set themselves up as a contender in the future, downing Maize 39-27.
SALINA — The Newton High School boys’ swimming team put together one of its best showings of the season, finishing second in a double-meet Wednesday in Salina. There were seven teams in the meet, but teams were scored separately against co-hosts Salina Central and Salina South.
LEAVENWORTH — Trying to shore up its position in the top echelon of the KCAC and fight off several challengers, the Bethel College men’s basketball team needed to overcome a 13-point deficit to down the University of Saint Mary 69-65 Wednesday in KCAC play in Leavenworth. Bethel trailed 34-26 at the half.
Wednesday was the first day of the college sport National Letter of Intent signing period for most colleges. Newton High School reported six signings — three in football, one in softball, one in volleyball and one in golf.
