If the Ark Valley- Chisholm Trail Division I Track and Field Championships Thursday at Bethel’s Thresher Stadium were scored solely on the throwing events, the Newton Railers would have probably came away with league titles. Newton struggled to score in some other areas, leading to a third-place finish for the boys and a sixth-place finish for the girls.
With just a few weeks before the start of the season, the Newton Sluggin’ Rebels summer college baseball team is still looking for host families for players to stay with. The team has been playing since 2000 and has made several trips to the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita.

As the old proverb goes, “for the want of a nail,” or in this case a third out or even a third strike, a sweep was lost for the Newton High School baseball team against Valley Center Tuesday and Wednesday at Klein-Scott Field. When the first game was suspended because of weather in the bottom of the third inning on Tuesday, the Railers were down 3-0.
The injury bug that’s hit the Newton High School softball team of late has forced some radical lineup changes against defending Class 5A state champion Valley Center Wednesday on senior night at Kelsch Field. Newton fell to the Hornets 14-1 and 12-1.
