Under second-year coach Demetric Williams, the Newton High School boys’ basketball team will look to take another step forward in the rebuilding process.Williams is assisted by Jermaine Brown, Keenen Coley and Tanner Wallace.Newton was 2-18 last season, 2-10 in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play.
The Newton High School girls’ basketball team will have a new coach and a lot of new faces taking the court for the 2023-24 season.Billy Bledsoe takes the reins of the team, succeeding Tavis Leake, who left for an assistant coaching spot at Friends University.Bledsoe is a former assistant at his alma mater Graceland University as well as Newman.
GOESSEL — The Goessel Bluebirds return four starters and two other letterwinners to prepare themselves for the Wheat State League grind.Ryan Hoopes begins his 17th season as the Bluebirds’ coach.Goessel was 12-9 last season, 5-3 in WSL play.Goessel fell to Canton-Galva in the Class 1A, Division I sub-state quarterfinals.Returning starters include Cheyenne Sawyer (5-5, sr., PG, 11.5 ppg), Braylyn Hoopes (5-5, sr., G), Jaicee Griffin (5-8, sr., P) and Abbigail Funk (5-4, jr., G).
HALSTEAD — With its entire starting lineup back, the Halstead High School girls’ basketball team is looking to be in the thick of the Central Kansas League and Class 3A state races.Derek Schutte begins his 11th season at Halstead.
MOUNDRIDGE — The Moundridge Wildcat girls’ basketball team will have three starters and another returning letterwinner return to gird up for another tough Heart of America League campaign.Kaleigh Huxman returns for her third season at Moundridge, where she is 23-20.

ELBING — The Berean Academy girls’ basketball team will look to two returning starters and four other returning players to carry the load for the defending Class 2A state champions.Kristin Wiebe returns for her 19th season at Berean, where she is 342-85.Berean was 25-1 last season, 9-0 in HOAL play.
