A wave of something like panic washed through members of the Healthy Harvey Coalition this week. A member and principle founder, Lynnette Redington, was on the hot seat due to a quarantine order improperly issued by the Health Department. There was some detailed reporting on this in the Kansan, which led me to watch the video of the week’s County Commission meeting. It was very much a relief. Redington and Toby Harkins, her Deputy Director, arrived much better prepared than their critics, and finished looking that way as well.

Trump Returns Power to Declare War to Congress?

I almost never agree with Mr. Trump. However, having wasted a life as a lawyer trying to resurrect the Constitution of “limited, specifically enumerated powers” and checks and balances to avoid tyranny, I found myself reading his February 19, 2025, executive order proclaiming that, “ending Federal overreach and restoring the constitutional separation of powers is a priority of my Administration,” with hope and amazement.

Individualism versus Community

R.F.K. Jr. again asserted that he would let parents decide for themselves whether to vaccinate their child. This will lead to dramatically more deaths from measles and other childhood diseases as more and more states are now removing the requirements for vaccines for school attendance.

Imagine that during World War II, at the height of Nazi Germany’s blitz of Britain, President Roosevelt invited PM Winston Churchill to Washington and humiliated him with derisive comments about Britain’s looming defeat and failure to thank the President for US support. Unthinkable, of course, but that’s exactly what happened when Ukraine’s President Volodymir Zelensky visited Washington and had to endure Donald Trump’s appalling interrogation.

Exodusters and Nicodemus

Once Reconstruction came to an end in the post-Civil War South, anti-Black prejudice set in with a vengeance. Thus, many freed slaves decided to vacate the South. Many went to cities in the North, such as Chicago and Detroit, but others decided to take advantage of the Homestead Act and head to the Great Plains. Of those, many from Kentucky went to Kansas, where they were known as Exodusters—settlers on an exodus from the wet south to the dusty Great Plains.
