Thursday was a great day
Thursday was a great day for Newton, for reasons you may know and reasons you may not. Downtown was hopping on Thursday eve, as for the 35th time three blocks of Main were closed and food vendors moved in.

There are two constitutional amendments on the ballot for November. They really haven’t received much media coverage, so I wanted to take a moment and share with you what they do and why I support them both. First, HCR 5014 is an amendment to allow legislative oversight of the state agency rules and regulations process that has been used to make laws without going through the legislature.
Dear Doctors: My wife read somewhere that when kids grow up with a do in the house, it can keep them from getting schizophrenia. I know that having a pet can help kids develop responsibility, but preventing mental illness seems like a stretch. Is this based on psychology -- or something else?
In 1988 climatologist James Hansen announced, “Global warming has arrived.” Now, 34 years later, it is painfully obvious that climate catastrophe has arrived. Featuring scenes that have become more and more routine in recent years, summer in the northern hemisphere saw extreme heat and wildfires in many places, as well as torrential rains and colossal floods that washed away the products of human settlement in others.

Last month, I left my communications position working for a statewide elected official. Experiencing the stress of a “big job” during an election year, I was actually learning what the Kansas teacher shortage means. I didn’t realize it at the time, though, and I still had much more to learn. Emotionally understanding and empathizing with teachers and administrators was even further away.
Meet the new Kris Kobach. Is he the same as the old Kris Kobach? Before Kobach narrowly won the Republican primary for Governor in 2018, an independent group supporting then-Governor Jeff Colyer ran an ad featuring the tagline, “Call Kris Kobach. Tell him we can’t afford his antics.”
Support for renaming Lindley Hall I wholeheartedly support Anthony Cueller’s letter to the editor regarding Lindley Hall. Our community’s values require us to be clear with our students, our families and beyond, that we will not continue to promote our racist past.
