“Today we burn the rocks. Tomorrow we burn the oceans!” This was an unforgettable statement from one of the 16 mm films I showed to my students when I taught in 1971. My school district was poor. There was no money for audio-visuals. But I could borrow free films from the Oak Ridge Nuclear Lab in Tennessee. We also offered 9-week phase elective courses so students chose the science topics they wanted to study. One of my mini-courses was on Nuclear Power.
Dear Doctors: I broke my ankle about 18 months ago. Now, in the area just above the break, the skin on my leg has turned a dark color, like a bruise. It doesn’t seem to be going away. Is there anything I can do to lighten this up? Do you think that laser therapy could help?
Each month I want to provide you with regular updates about what’s going on in our nation’s capital and throughout the 4th District of Kansas. Here’s what happened in December.
With great power comes great responsibility. This phrase has been uttered time and time again and is applicable to a wide range of situations, especially in politics.
Ask anyone to name famous lawmen from the Old West, and two names are sure to pop up immediately: Wyatt Earp and Wild Bill Hickok. Then will come Bat Masterson and Bill Tighlman, and maybe Bat’s brothers, Ed and Jim, or Wyatt’s brothers, Virgil and Morgan. After that the names come a lot more slowly, if at all. That’s not because there weren’t good marshals and sheriffs in the West; they just didn’t get the press. Or didn’t live long enough into the twentieth century to be able tell their own version of their lives, as did Earp to his biographer, Stuart Lake.
Dear Doctors: While stationed in Alaska more than 35 years ago, I experienced the tips of my fingers turning white in the cold weather. A doctor said it’s probably Raynaud’s syndrome. Does this condition slow down healing? I ask because a deep scratch on my shin still hasn’t healed after four weeks.
General Patton, who came down in history as a genius at war, in the end said “war is a horrible thing.” Generals MacArthur, Bradley, and Marshall echoed the sentiments when they saw the loss of life, hope, and home.
It has come time to say goodbye to 2022, and hello to 2023. One can only imagine what this moment must have felt like 150 years ago, scant months after the city was officially formed and The Newton Kansan began to publish.
Happy New Year! As this year comes to an end, and we begin to look forward to the next, many of us are quickly finalizing our plans for a new year’s resolution of some kind, while others may be looking forward to accomplishing many different things in the coming year. Without a doubt, this time of year brings at least a brief moment to reflect on the previous year, while also looking forward to the coming year’s possibilities.
