HUTCHINSON - Sally Ann Flaming, 75, of Hutchinson, Kansas passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born October 4, 1946 in Goessel, Kansas, the daughter of Abe and Velma (Hiebert) Flaming.
1939 - 2021 Doris Jane (Mendel) Schmidt, 82, passed away on Monday December 20, 2021, in Omaha, NE. She was born on October 29, 1939, in Freeman, SD, to Kathryn Laura Hofer and Jacob Mendel, Jr., the third of three children.
Doyle Rayvon Smith, age 76, passed away on November 24, 2021. He was born to the late Clarence Oliver Smith and Fern Hazel Dirks on November 10, 1945, in Great Bend, Kansas. He grew up working on the family farm in western Kansas and attended Bethel College for two years, where he met his wife, Janice. After transferring to Kansas State University, he earned his Agricultural Engineering degree in 1970.
Dwight Scofield, 89, died January 8, 2021. Services will be held at a later date in early summer.
NEWTON - Richard C. “Rich” Oswald 65, died Friday, January 7, 2022 at his Newton residence. He was born December 2, 1956 in Newton, Kansas to Carl J. and Judith J. (Brainard) Oswald. On December 21, 2007 he married Jacquie L Entz at Newton, Kansas and she survives of the home.
HESSTON - Mary Elizabeth Erb Armfield passed away on January 8, 2022.Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hesston Mennonite Church Community Center on Wednesday, Jan 12 and there will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 13 also at Hesston Mennonite Church.
Alyce Carolyn Archer Reimer passed away November 18, 2021. She was born in 1924 in Nebraska to the late Guy and Lueta Archer. Her four brothers have preceded her in death. In 1946 Alyce married Winfred Reimer and they celebrated 72 years of marriage before his death in 2019. They had four children: Ronald (Jan) of Lexington, KY, Kent (Jan) of Mesa, AZ, Glen (Jamie) of Goshen, IN and LeAnn Clement (Ken) of Bellingham, WA. She also leaves behind 10 Grandchildren and 6 Great-grandchildren. Few knew that Alyce was a “Code Girl”chosen to serve in DC during WWII, breaking Japanese code. Sworn to secrecy, even her children didn’t learn the extent of what she did until a few years ago. When the family moved from Kansas to Washington in 1959 Alyce brought awareness to special needs education in Whatcom County where she lived. Alyce also served on the board of Lighthouse Mission in Bellingham, WA. Appreciating art and nature she became passionate about growing Dahlias. She and Winfred became members of the Whatcom Dahlia Society where they made many friends. In later years they loved to spend time traveling in their 5th Wheel to see their children, grandchildren, family and friends in different parts of the country. Faith and church family were very important to them. They were members of Glendale Mennonite church and later Good News Fellowship church. Alyce will be remembered by family and friends for her love of the Lord, her commitment to her church, and her love of people. Services will be announced at a later date. NEWTON - Shirley’s life began on December 8, 1935, the daughter of Bill and Esther (Brown) Buller in Hillsboro, Kansas. She graduated from Hillsboro High Class of 1953. She married Lee Bartel on October 10, 1953 in Hillsboro. Shirley worked as a clerk at Clark Pharmacy
Thomas Leroy Metzler, aged 72, died surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 1, 2022, at his home in Newton after a lengthy journey with cancer. Tom, a 1968 graduate of Newton High School, married Aimee, and together they raised their son, Scott (Robin). Known affectionately as Pop to his grandchildren Zach Metzler, Tim Jeffries, and Emily Kepley (Andrew), and his great-grandchildren Maggie Elizabeth, Allie Jo, and Bentley Thomas, he was a hands-on grandparent, fully engaged in making sure his family was happy, safe, and loved.
