Dry summer leads to increased pool usage

Newton Kansan A hot, dry summer has meant good things for the Newton Municipal Pool – like beating 2023’s attendance numbers with about two weeks left in the summer swimming season.“It has been a good year, it has been a lot of work, but it has been good,” said Bart Peace, assistant superintendent of the Newton Recreation Commission which operates the Newton Municipal Pool.The pool saw 12,891 swimmers by the end of July, well above the 11,881 number for the same time a year ago.That came after multiple heat waves that pushed the temperatures well above 100 degrees – which, Peace said, actually slows down traffic at the city pool.“It gets above 100, and you would think everyone wants to swim,” Peace said.

Record 171,000 Kansans enroll in the federally subsidized ACA health insurance marketplace

TOPEKA — A record 171,000 Kansans enrolled this year in the subsidized health insurance marketplace under the Affordable Care Act, an increase more than 60,000 over the past two years.The nonprofit, nonpartisan BY: TIM CARPENTER Health Institute reported Thursday that enrollment in Kansas for the 2024 plan year climbed 37.7% from the 124,000 total in 2023 and the 107,000 total in 2022.

Former Marion police chief charged with witness interference after raid on Kansas newspaper

TOPEKA — A special prosecutor in court documents filed Tuesday says former Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody “induced a witness to withhold information” in the days after Cody led a raid on a newspaper office, the publisher’s home and the home of a city councilwoman.Special prosecutor Barry Wilkerson, of Riley County, charged Cody with interference with judicial process, a low-level felony, in Marion County District Court.
