A project to rebuild, resurface and expand Hesston Road began March 14, with a portion of the road just east of Newton closed for crews to being milling asphalt and cutting concrete. “The road will not be closed from end to end for the duration,” said Jim Meier, superintendent of the Harvey County Road and Bridge Department.

It may appear that the Newton Board of Education authorized a tax increase at its meeting March 14, but that isn’t quite what happened. The board voted in favor of publishing a legal notice that would allow for an increase to the Local Option Budget tax.

For the first time, low-income people in Kansas and Missouri can buy health insurance on the federal exchange throughout the year. The new year-round enrollment period applies to those who earn 150% or less of the federal poverty line — meaning up to $39,750 for a family of four.
