Amish cook: Life remains eventful

Here the birds are singing. I wonder if they too are glad for a break from the muggy hot climate on this early morning? I know I am. Without the heat, though, there would not be those bumper crops from the garden or even swimming days in the pond. Yeah, we’ll take it all as it comes, and when autumn rolls around we’ll heave a little sigh of relief.

Prairie Doc Perspectives: Inflammation and the immune system

Many of my patients will say “Doctor, I am so inflamed”. The use of the word inflammation is commonplace as we search the market for anti-inflammatory diets or self-help books on inflammation. The inflammatory response created by the immune system contributes to healing, but when left unchecked can contribute to chronic disease, allergy, and non-specific symptoms such as achy joints, fatigue, and malaise.

Bethel students do theater with inmates at Hutch Correctional Facility

An unusual theater performance is looking for an audience, as Bethel College’s Prison Theater Project returns as a summer term course. Two students, under the direction of John McCabe-Juhnke, professor emeritus of communication arts, are collaborating with seven inmates at Hutchinson Correctional Facility’s medium-security East Unit for a performance titled Inside Story.

Teens learn crafts at NPL

Can one upcycle a plastic bottle to create a piece of art? Yep, and teens learned how to create a “diving squid” art piece from plastic bottles at Newton Public Library this week. The Teen GameZone & Crafts on June 20 was focused on a project to use plastic water bottles to make art.
