TOPEKA — Communities across Kansas are a an increased risk for West Nile virus infections, the state health department announced Friday. West Nile virus is the most common cause of mosquito-borne illnesses in the country and spreads from the bug’s bite rather than person-to-person contact.
The Newton Public Library Foundation announced July 19 a gift of $300,000 from The Sunderland Foundation of Overland Park to the Where Community Connects campaign. The campaign crossed the $2.2 million mark, leaving about $500,000 to go.

TOPEKA — Voting rights groups are appealing the dismissal of a lawsuit challenging a 2021 election law they fear will impact voter registration efforts and suppress voters. The Kansas Court of Appeals declined last month to block the law, which criminalizes impersonation of an election official, among other things.
TOPEKA — The organization leading the effort to defeat an Aug. 2 abortion amendment to the Kansas Constitution took in $6.54 million in contributions since start of the year and spent two-thirds of that cash on advertising to influence primary voters.

It appears there will be changes made to zoning regulations of wind energy turbines, and those changes could come as soon as August. The Harvey County Commission will review some recommendations which came out of a meeting of the county planning and zoning board last week which was dedicated to reviewing current conditional use permit requirements for wind turbines.
