Topsoil protection should be stressed in the next farm bill, U.S. House Ag panel told

WASHINGTON — Farmers and academics at a Wednesday hearing stressed the need for members of the U.S. House Agriculture Committee to support regenerative agriculture farming practices in the upcoming farm bill to protect topsoil. U.S. House Agriculture Committee Chair David Scott said he held the hearing to discuss ways policymakers and the Department of Agriculture could help farmers incorporate regenerative agriculture practices. That investment in soil health would curb climate change and prevent a food shortage, the Georgia Democrat said.

Bivalent booster comes to Health Department

The Harvey County Health Department has a limited number of COVID boosters, the new “Bivalent” boosters designed to take on a rapidly spreading variant of the virus. “Everyone has been hearing about the bivalent booster, we currently have 100 doses in our office of the Moderna booster that is eligible for 18 and older,” said Lynette Redington, director of the Harvey County Health Department.

More Americans got health insurance during the pandemic, but not in Kansas

WICHITA, Kansas — Federal pandemic programs that buoyed health insurance rates nationwide in 2021 didn’t ultimately lead to an increase in coverage in Kansas — meaning that, for the first time in decades, Kansans are significantly less likely to have health insurance than the U.S. population as a whole. As millions of Americans lost jobs and with it their employer-based health insurance, the federal government enacted broad relief measures to help people access coverage. Those programs contributed to a marked drop in the rate of uninsured Americans in 2021 to match a prior record low of 8.6%, according to new data released this week by the Census Bureau. But the rate of uninsured Kansans remained steady between 2019 and 2021 at 9.2%.
