LGBTQ students wrestle with tensions at Christian colleges

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (AP) — Tensions over gender identity and sexual orientation pervade the campuses of hundreds of U.S. Catholic and Protestant universities. The Christian teachings they ascribe to hold that God created humans in unchangeable male and female identities, and sex should only happen within the marriage of a man and a woman. But today’s students are used to far different values. The majority of Christian colleges and universities list “sexual orientation” in their nondiscrimination statements, and half of them also list “gender identity” – a big increase from even a decade ago. But translating that into practice creates struggles affecting most campus life — curriculum, enrollment at single-gender institutions, housing, restroom design, and pronoun use.

With Kansas home heating gas prices soaring, it may be harder than ever for some families to keep up with their utility bills. The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC), which regulates utility companies, has a “cold weather rule” that protects people from having their heat shut off. The cold weather rule is in effect between Nov. 1 and March 31 when temperatures fall below 35 degrees – but it doesn’t apply to everyone. Whether you are protected depends on who your utility company is.

City to dedicate time capsule

The city of Newton is about to double the number of time capsules housed in an around city hall, part of the last vestiges of a year-long Sesquicentennial celebration. “We hope to mark the occasion of our Sesquicentennial, capture this particular time in Newton’s history, and send a message of community pride to Newtonians of the future,” said Erin McDaniel, director of public information for the city.
