In the garden: Growing Brussels sprouts

Growing up we used to call them little baby cabbages! Brussels sprouts gets its name from Brussels, Belgium. The plant is a close relative of cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower, but is slower growing. Best success in Kansas is to grow the “sprouts”— small heads that grow along the stem and resemble small cabbage heads—in the fall season by planting in early July.

Fighting for schools has a long history in Walton

The threat that Walton could lose the charter school currently on the edge of the small city is very real - and a topic that seemingly pops up every five years or so. “My children are no longer in the Walton program, when they asked me why I was coming tonight, I said ‘Walton is fighting again.’ They said, ‘go,’” said Elisha Blount, a parent of Walton graduates at Feb.13 meeting of the Board of Education.

Kansas plan to penalize homeless people for sleeping on public property draws sharp criticism

A proposal to address homelessness with bans on camps for people without housing drew sharp criticism in the Kansas Legislature on Thursday. The legislation makes it a misdemeanor for unauthorized camping, sleeping or setting up long-term shelters on land controlled by the state or local government.
