Harvey County Administrator Anthony Swartzendruber has earned the Certified Public Finance Officer designation through the Government Finance Officers Association. Less than 900 individuals have earned the GFOA’s CPFO designation, of which about 500 are active with GFOA and public finance roles.
Science author Cindy Blobaum hosted drop-in activities in the children’s area of Newton Public Library April 3. During the vist, students between the ages of 5 and 12 were able to make a buzzing bug; find and keep very small, real fossils; explore gravity through finger balance; and assemble a large dinosaur skeleton puzzle.
The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office has concluded one investigation while another continues into the deaths of two persons discovered within days of each other. The deaths are not related, aside from being found within the same week.

E 7th Street to close for utility work A portion of East Seventh Street will be closed for five days beginning April 10 for utility work for the new Newton Public Library. A small section of East Seventh will be closed just west of North Pine Street.
