As the board of education was approached to approve the third bid package for a project to renovate Santa Fe 5/6 Center and Lindley Hall campus architects came bearing good news. The project, which was bonded following an election last year, is moving along under budget.

John Van Meter stepped to the podium for public comment May 23 at the Newton City Commission meeting and he wanted to speak for a few minutes about water rates in Newton. Unlike speakers who spent months railing on the city for an increase that was approved for next year, Van Meter wanted to suggest a change to how the city bills and works with customers.

TOPEKA — The chairman of the Kansas Republican Party ordered reconsideration Friday of proposed changes in party bylaws that would undermine the influence of Black and Hispanic members on the partisan organization’s executive board.
Parents as Teachers hosted a “touch a truck” night at Centennial Park May 19. Parents and their children were able to get up close and personal with large vehicles, including the Bearcat employed by the Harvey County Sheriff’s office and tucks from the city including a firetruck from Newton Fire/EMS.
