Prairie Doc Perspective: “How Are You? Does Midwestern Politeness Get In The Way?”

Midwest Culture is unique. We “America’s Heartlanders” are known for our outdoor hobbies, farming, winter survival strategies, hard work and country living. We are also known for our politeness. It is at times an autopilot response to hold a door open, greet another with a smile, drop off treats for a neighbor or when running into someone familiar ask, “how are you?” How often have we asked, “how are you” and heard the answer, “good” or “fine” or even answered this question ourselves this way.

Amish Cook: “Children, team up!”

They held hands by two and three; the two oldest each wore a backpack. I pulled a roller suitcase with a handbag on top and carried Joshua with my free hand. I looked to the right, then to the left. This adventure was happening to us at long last! We made our way into the Indianapolis airport by the Southwest entrance. Walking on into the large entry doors, I blinked over the tears pushing at my eyelids-no, Daddy was not here as we had always thought he would be on this trip.

Bike run takes over Cassoday

The Cassoday bike run is a motorcycle rally that occurs the first Sunday of every month March through October in Cassoday, 38 miles east of Newton on First Street. This month the run was June 3. Cassody is at the intersection of the Kansas Turnpike and U.S. 177 in the Flint Hills. It was started by some bikers, stopping at a small cafe in town one day back in 1991. Self portrait Saturday at NPL

Newton Public Library recently hosted a “Self-Portrait Saturday.” Students were invited to create their own self-portraits in a pop art style, with support and instruction from Beth Burns. Their self-portraits will be incorporated into the library’s summer decorations.

Summer starts at NPL

A busy summer season began at Newton Public Library on May 25 with the summer reading kickoff party. Teens and tweens were invited to a party where they could paint a self portrait, play with legos and use science toys for about an hour at Newton Public Library.
