SMCHA offers educational grants

The Swiss Mennonite Cultural and Historical Association (SMCHA) is again offering educational grants to individuals preparing for full-time Christian service, Mennonite ministry, Mennonite voluntary service, or other related careers. The maximum grant available is $1,000 for full-time ministerial students with lesser amounts for part-time ministerial students, Mennonite voluntary service participants, and college students. The grants are for the 2025-2026 school year. The application deadline is May 30, 2025.

Amish Cook: The wonder of spring days

The days I have been waiting on are coming into reality. Ah, the wonder of spring days! There is nothing quite like those first days of sunshine, warm enough to warm your body and your heart. Somehow to me it just feels like God’s love gently shining down on me. It won’t take care of all things in life but it helps me connect to the love of God who makes all things well despite the difficult dimensions.

Prairie Doc Perspective: Pneumonia vaccine saves lives

Over one hundred years ago, the gold mining industry of South Africa had a problem: too many workers were dying from pneumonia. They turned to Dr. Almorth Wright, a British physician who had successfully created a vaccine against typhoid fever that saved countless lives of British soldiers in World War I and other wars. Wright and his colleagues developed an inoculation of killed pneumococci bacteria which resulted in a substantial reduction of cases of pneumonia and death in the miners.

I looked around the circle of little faces in the living room as we read our evening Bible story. There was nothing in me that wanted to leave them for four days, but then when I thought of my mother-in-law in Mexico who planned to do surgery for her cancer and needed someone to be with her, it changed the picture; yes, I also wanted to go.
