Sluggin’ Rebels drop league opener in 10 innings

AUGUSTA — The Kansas Cannons scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to get by the Newton Sluggin’ Rebels 3-2 Tuesday night in Jayhawk League play in Augusta. Before the runs in the 10th inning, the Sluggin’ Rebels defense had 18 straight scoreless innings.

Education Frontlines: India Moves Away from Science

In its May 30 issue, the premier science journal Nature just detailed the new science curriculum being mandated in India. Combined with prior actions concerning switching from English to Hindi as the major language of communication, India appears to be more rapidly drifting toward being a religious-led state or theocracy.

Garden tour coming this weekend

Gary Roth of North Newton has spent a lot of time in his backyard, rebuilding an arbor and caring for every area of the yard and gardens. He and his wife Janet have lived in their home since the day it was constructed – 26 years ago.

Staff at Greenwood and Restlawn cemeteries will begin their annual post-Memorial Day cleanup on June 13. Any temporary decorations left on gravesites will be discarded. If you have any decorations you would like to keep, please remove them by June 12. This does not include flowers in permanent vases.

Thomas E. “Tom” Ratzlaff, 69, died at his Newton residence on May 31, 2023. He is survived by his wife Donna of the home and Brother Timothy “Tim” Ratzlaff of Newton. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, inlaws and friends. A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday June 17th at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton with Pastor Donna Voteau and Pastor Tonya Ramer-Wenger presiding. Visitation with the family will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, June 16, 2023 at the church. A full obituary will be published soon. Memorials may be made to caring hands humane society or Bethel College Athletics and left in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
