Dear Doctors: There was a story in the news recently about a man who had a tapeworm living in his brain. Our two teenage boys also saw it and are now obsessed. They’re grossed out and fascinated, and they are asking lots of questions. An explanation would be welcome.

‘Glow Riders’ light up the night

Friday a group of cyclists gathered in Ash Street Park to create a non-traditional light show for Christmas — a winter “Glow Ride.” Bicyclists used glow sticks and battery operated lights to decorate their bicycles for a ride on the Sand Creek Trail through Newton. “We had 12 cyclists, all were enthused about it,” said Dan Shifflett, member of Walk and Roll Harvey and event organizer.

Moderna: Boosters effective on omicron

Moderna said Monday that a booster dose of its COVID-19 vaccine should offer protection against the rapidly spreading omicron variant. Moderna said lab tests showed the half-dose booster shot increased by 37 times the level of so-called neutralizing antibodies able to fight omicron.

Newton claims five medals at KC Stampede

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Newton High School boys’ wrestling team went against the best in the region and some of the best in the nation, claiming four medals and a 13th-place team finish out of 54 scoring teams Friday and Saturday at the Kansas City Stampede.
