Short-handed Railer girls challenge Hutch

Short-handed, the Newton High School girls’ basketball team continues to make strides, falling to Hutchinson 48-38 Friday in AV-CTL I play at Ravenscroft Gym. Newton fell to Hutchinson by 29 in the last meeting, but was able to stay with the Salthawks throughout the game in the rematch.

Winter storm drops heavy snow

In less than 12 hours things changed for students and parents in the Newton School District. Already muddling through back-to-back cancellations from snow, parents received a notice at about 8 p.m Feb. 3 there would be school on Feb. 4.

Gary L. Jones

Gary L. Jones died January 28, 2022 at Schowalter Villa in Hesston, KS. He was 88 years old and had been a resident there for over 3 years. Gary was born at Dexter, KS July 18, 1933 to Emory and Virgia Radcliff Jones. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Rowe on September 2, 1951. They were married over 70 years. Gary was a graduate of Oklahoma A&M University (now Oklahoma State University) and received his Master’s degree from Kansas State University. He served 2 years in the US Army following graduation from Oklahoma A&M. He taught Vocational Agriculture at Ford, KS and Peabody, KS for 36 years, 32 of those in Peabody. He loved farming, raising sheep and searching for antiques. He operated Mayesville Mercantile in downtown Peabody after retiring from teaching. He was predeceased by his parents Emory and Virgia Jones and sister Rosalie Jones Lanham. He is survived by his wife Marilyn of Peabody, KS; son Mike Jones DVM and wife Tresa (Vogelman) of Seneca, KS; daughter Lynn Hughes and husband Marc of Carney, O;, 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Peabody Community Foundation, the Kansas FFA Foundation or a remembrance of your choice.

Bethel women have hot hand in win

WINFIELD – The Bethel College women’s basketball team put together one of its biggest win margins of the season, stopping Southwestern 84-48 Thursday in KCAC play in Winfield. It was the second-highest score of the season for the Threshers and the highest in conference play.
