We’re not buying it. Fireworks need limits

Each year one of the most contentious issues the Newton City Commission must tackle is fireworks sale and discharge rules. The tough questions they have to answer include when tents can open, and when people can fire off their flaming balls of celebration.

When Legislators Attack Professions

These last few weeks, teachers across the country are again being commanded to set aside their lessons and begin teaching to the state assessments. This interference with teacher professionalism has been going on for over two decades, accelerated by No Child Left Behind and surviving under E.S.S.A. accountability. Look at last year’s tests and drill into each student’s head the answers in order to score higher on this year’s assessment. As a result, state assessment scores go up while national aptitude tests and other measures of student creativity continue to drop. International assessments show the United States descending into the level of undeveloped nations.

Bethel to face Briar Cliff at nationals

The Bethel College men’s basketball team will return to the scene of its biggest triumphs Friday and March 12 for the first two rounds of the NAIA Championships. The Threshers will face Briar Cliff at 8 p.m.

Proctor paces Hesston to sub-state finals

NICKERSON – The Hesston High School boys’ basketball team did what not too many teams have been able to do in the past few decades, blow out Wichita Collegiate. The Swathers stopped Collegiate 57-27 Thursday in the semifinals of the Class 3A sub-state tournament in Nickerson.
