Responding to Estes

I feel some urgency to respond to Rep. Ron Estes’s recent article complaining about the federal budget deficits, blaming Democrats for their spending. He and his Republican colleagues need reminding that the tax cuts of the Trump administration benefited the wealthiest 1% of Americans, and those tax dollars were and still are needed to help close that budget deficit. The middle class was led to believe that they were beneficiaries of the tax cuts, but in fact, the wealthiest 1% received a tax cut 77 times more than the lowest 80%. There were additional loopholes put into place for which the wealthiest 1% received 2/3 of the windfall.

They had a recommendation in front of them to keep a recycling program operating at the Harvey County Transfer Station operating for a time - allowing cities and county residents to make their own decisions about how to pay for said service.

Think about water resources

Any resource taken for granted is a resource at risk of being lost. That is why the Kansas Ground Water Association, The Groundwater Foundation, and the National Ground Water Association will be joining hundreds of organizations across the country in celebrating National Groundwater Awareness Week, March 6-12. National Groundwater Awareness Week, now in its 23rd year, is an annual week of awareness, education, and advocacy focusing on one of the nation and state’s most precious resources.
